Slotted Nuts

by Fastenright

A Slotted Nut has slots cut into one end of the nut.
When it is used in an application, a bolt or threaded bar generally has a pre-drilled hole so that when the slotted nut is threaded on and torqued to the required position, it can be then secured using a cotter pin or write to prevent rotation.
Slotted Nuts are used in applications where vibration or motion might undo the locknut.
Both a Castle Nut and Slotted Nut look similar, and can often be used interchangeably because they have almost identical dimensions. However, they are different in that the protrusions on a Slotted Nut are from the base of the nut and include the corners, whereas a Castle Nut looks like a standard nut with triangular portions protruding, but not including the corners of the hex.

This is a Castle Nut.
Slotted nuts are generally manufactured as standard from Steel Grade 4, 8 and 10, and A2 and A4 Stainless Steel.
A range of sizes, thread styles and materials are available now from Fastenright, with specials available to order.
Non-standard sizes, materials and finishes are available to order as specials, including small volume manufacture, modifications and custom parts made to drawings.
Minimum order quantities may apply.
