Protan Cool Roof is a roof system where a white membrane is used when laying exposed roofing with a documented high Solar Reflectance Index. It also has high thermal emissions, which is a measurement of how efficiently heat is radiated as thermal radiation to the surroundings.
A white roof surface with a high Solar Reflectance Index gives significantly lower temperatures in a compact roof construction compared with darker colours and thus contributes to transferring less heat to the actual building. This is a key characteristic in warm climates because it contributes to reducing the building's need for cooling, and considering that the building contributes to heating its surroundings, particularly in urban areas (« the urban heat island effect»).
The Cool Roof with a white colour is, naturally, more effective in warm and sunny regions than in cooler climates. It can, however, be useful to lay a white membrane in front of the intake of, for example, an air conditioning system.
The Cool Roof provides both immediate and more long-term saving in terms of the building's energy costs. The product can be installed mechanically or as a vacuum roof. Protan Cool Roof has been tested pursuant to ASTM C 1549-04 and ASTM C 1371-04a in accordance with approved methods from the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC).
