Contemporary Kitchen

by Edmondson Interiors

A fortuitous word-of-mouth recommendation led to the design of this beautifully furnished open-plan kitchen, dining and living hub by Edmondson Interiors.

Deciding which kitchen company to use can often be daunting. As well as there being so many to choose from, it s hard to know until the project is underway quite how reliable they ll be. So when this couple s friends spoke so highly of the team at Edmondson Interiors, they decided to follow it up. Not only did the company come warmly recommended, but they had also seen for themselves the superior quality of its work.

This family in Sevenoaks were building their home from scratch and were looking for a contemporary kitchen that would sit well within the open plan living space they were creating.

As professionals with young children, we wanted the kitchen to be attractive and functional whilst promoting easy family living, recalls the client. We also decided to go for a hand painted wooden kitchen as we felt this softened the very contemporary feel of the rest of the house.

Designer, Simon Gray responded with a stunning design that combines two styles of hand-painted furniture in three Paints from Farrow & Ball - Manor house grey, Hague blue and Railings, giving an unashamedly American look.

The island is just stunning and creates a clear divide between the kitchen and dining zone whilst housing integrated appliances and providing additional preparation space. The island countertop floats above the base, thanks to a small recessed detail, adding to the strength of this piece of furniture. Simon chose 50mm honed Silestone in a pale grey tone which works particularly well with the sculptured sink by Kohler that he found for this kitchen.

Cooking and entertaining was really important. The Wolf hob would be a quite at home in a busy restaurant. Large, gas, simple, robust, big red knobs and eminently controllable - this hob covers the range of heat required for melting chocolate too something fiercer for a stir fry. The vast double oven is also from the Wolf stable. Superb blue interior, fabulous lighting this is just a joy to use, accessible, lots of different but easy to use options. The Wolf warming drawer a luxury you can slow cook in! The Gaggenau fridge/freezer is commodious and beautifully engineered.

One of the client s favourite aspects of the kitchen is the coffee station . A tucked away area to neatly display and conceal all the necessary ingredients for the perfect cuppa!

There are a couple of concealed details that make this project very personal to the client. Firstly the larder cupboard is exquisite and will always be a cupboard that is a pleasure to open. The interior is simple but it hits the mark. The walk in larder is gorgeous with an incredible carefully designed and measure piece of wine Racking.

The floor is in a grey smoked engineered oak. The darker paints are balanced by the silestone lagoon work surfaces and buckets of natural light. The lighting transforms this space in the evening with a mix of concealed lighting under the bar - task lighting in exactly the right places and pendant lighting over the dining table.

Very soft natural oak finish with a continuous grain stretches around the whole island. The island has a very tactile feel to it and invites you to run your hand along the grain. Each and every door and drawer fascia is edged with solid oak and then lacquered with a 2% sheen. The shallow recess to the Silestone worktop elevates and accentuates the slim 20mm surface.
