Patent glazing refers to a system of glazing used in the roofs of buildings, which differs from standard rooflights in that individual panes of glass are combined together and connected with profiled metal glazing bars, usually made of aluminium or steel.

Many patent glazing manufacturers recommend a minimum pitch of 15 degrees, depending on the design of the glazing bars, and if opening vents are desired/needed. If they are not, then 3-5 degrees can be considered acceptable in some situations, where special consideration is given to flashings and other seals.

Patent glazing can also be used vertically where continuity is required with sloped areas, although it is not generally recommended for larger or standalone applications because of a lack of ability to withstand structural loads of panes above.
