Kingsway to the Sea, Brighton Beach

15-11-2025

Brighton Beach has long been one of the UK's most iconic coastal spots, with a vibrant seaside character and a thriving community of cyclists and pedestrians. When Brighton & Hove City Council set out to revitalise Kingsway to the Sea, sustainability, aesthetics, and practicality all had to work in concert. The Bike Storage Company was tasked with designing and installing a premium refuse solution that provided secure storage while blending seamlessly with the natural coastal environment.

The client's objectives were clear: offer robust, weather-resistant security for both refuse and M&E services discreetly; use sustainable materials in keeping with the project's environmental commitments; and enhance the visual appeal of the regenerated public space.

Working closely with the Council's project team, The Bike Storage Company crafted a bespoke Amazon Eco Plant Enclosure — a unique structure combining durability, sustainable materials, and an elegant design inspired by natural timber architecture.

The enclosure features FSC-certified, clear-sealed and planed softwood timber battens throughout, delivering a warm, natural aesthetic well-suited to the coastal setting. The steel frame is hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2022 with RAL 7022 powder coating, built specifically to withstand coastal conditions including sea air and high footfall. Three double-leaf swing gates with robust handles and hasp and staple closures provide secure access, complemented by an internal single-leaf gate. A pergola-style roof constructed from 65 x 1400mm timber profiles completes the structure, providing airflow, natural light, and architectural character that elevates the enclosure well beyond a standard utility installation. The full specification is BREEAM-compliant, supporting the Council's environmental targets, with Thermopine cladding and RAL 9005 finish available as upgrades.

Installation was managed efficiently, with clear site access and preparation arranged in advance with the Council team. A single delivery and install visit was completed without disruption to other ongoing works on the seafront.

The finished enclosure is a striking addition to Brighton's regenerated seafront — providing secure and discreet storage for refuse while supporting the Council's ambitions to combine sustainability and practicality in a prominent public realm setting. The natural timber finish complements the coastal surroundings, and the robust galvanised steel framework ensures the structure will perform reliably for years to come.
