Rotec Secures Door Package at EcoPark South

21-07-2022

The EcoPark South redevelopment is the first phase of North London Waste Authority’s plans for a new sustainable waste hub – the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP). Having diverted over 21 million tonnes of rubbish from landfill since it first opened in 1971, the site is now benefiting from £1.2bn worth of investment to continue its essential work.

The new waste management hub will process 135,000 tonnes of recyclable material each year and provide a new location for the public to recycle their waste. Additionally, non-recyclable waste will be processed at the energy recovery facility and generate up to 70 megawatts of electricity, enough to power around 127,000 homes as well as providing residual heat to a local heat network.

A modern visitor and education centre will provide space for the local community to learn more about the importance of a circular economy, their role in responsible recycling and the overall reduction of the carbon footprint of waste.

The environmental impact during construction has been meticulously managed with innovative solutions being utilised wherever possible. A temporary bulky waste facility has been constructed at the site, which saw Exegy® ultra-low carbon concrete used for the first time in the UK. Significantly reducing the CO2 footprint of any project on which it is used, Ecocem Ultra provides an alternative to the traditional cement manufacturing process. The mix used on the project reduces the carbon footprint by up to 70 per cent when compared to traditional concrete.

Other environmental features include the use of Controlled Modulus Column piling and ground improvement solutions instead of Continuous Flight Auger Piles to reduce the embodied carbon in the scheme. A rainwater collection system which harvests rainwater from the roof of the building to re-use within the process and a renewable energy system powered by photovoltaic panels and geothermal energy to power the EcoPark House from site-generated sustainable sources.

Social value is also at the heart of the project with Taylor Woodrow placing great emphasis on partnering with the local community. Green jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities for nearby residents have been created under the scheme. Additionally, a partnership has been made with the nearby College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) to develop onsite skills training, which has seen almost 100 learners complete the course, receiving a BTEC Level 1 award in Work Skills & Health and Safety in the Construction Industry which will lead to a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) license for use throughout their careers.

In partnership with Taylor Woodrow, Rotec will be supplying and installing an extensive steel door package throughout the project including high-security, acoustic and general-purpose doors.

Following a technical review, our in-house estimating team identified significant value engineering solutions through an over-specification of the security doors. Our long-term industry and sector knowledge allowed us to suggest an alternative product which still provided sufficient security protection.

Having worked on a number of Energy from Waste facilities over the years, including Avonmouth, Earlsgate and Kemsley, we are confident in our ability to deliver the project to a high-quality completion.

“EcoPark is a landmark project that we were keen to be involved in from the start. The importance of confidence in tackling the climate emergency from industry leaders in construction is not to be undervalued. We are so pleased to be working on such an incredible, eco-friendly project that will drastically improve the way waste is processed in North London.

Having worked with Vinci on several projects over the years, we were keen to be involved with their civils division – Taylor Woodrow – to add value to this project. Following a technical review of the specification, we were able to identify a number of security-rated doors that could be replaced by our Ro-Door 200 range which still provided a level of security at a reduced cost for the client.”

Robbie Shaw – Sales Manager

Installation of our steel door package begins in Q3.
