Background

MAG (Manchester Airport Group) is the largest UK-owned airport operator, operating three of the UK’s busiest airports – Manchester, London Stanstead and East Midlands – providing flights to destinations across the globe for its 42 million annual passengers (pre-COVID19).

Manchester Airport has a total of 16 car parks across the site, with access to over 22,000 car parking spaces. Multi-storey parking is available across all three terminals, providing a safe and secure solution for both short and long-stay trips.

A £49m car park development was proposed, with the aim of creating an additional 8,000 new car parking spaces at Manchester Airport.

Having completed upwards of 25 MSCP projects over the past few years, Rotec were appointed by Galliford Try to manage the steel door package.

Our Solution

The project had complex fire and security requirements; we, therefore, recognised the importance of early engagement with the scheme’s architect, AECOM, to develop a bespoke solution. We worked collaboratively throughout the initial design process, providing several drawing revisions, and sharing our technical product knowledge and sector expertise through regular meetings.

A comprehensive specification was developed, including an L20 specification, door and ironmongery schedule and elevations. In addition, a bespoke threshold was developed to ensure no water ingress on the open deck; this has since become a standard feature across all Rotec MSCP projects.

With a tight turnaround requirement of just 4 weeks, we provided our fast-track service. This significantly reduced manufacture lead times – without compromising on overall product quality.

Due to a phased handover process, close coordination with Galliford Try was essential to ensure on-time project completion. The end project was a great success and, as a result, we secured an additional MSCP project with Galliford Try: Broadmarsh in Nottingham, which required a £200k steel door package.
