Luton DART

Background

The Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit) will speed travellers from Luton Airport Parkway station to the terminal of London Luton Airport in under four minutes, and replace the existing bus transfer service.

The fully-automated, cable-hauled fast transit encourages passengers to get to and from the airport by rail instead of individual car journeys by providing an electrically-powered and energy-efficient seamless transfer. Once open, the journey from St Pancras International to the airport terminal will be around just 30 minutes by the fastest trains.

Luton Rising, the Luton Council company that owns the airport, prioritised the local community through the provision of new skills to 720 people at a dedicated Construction Skills Hub, giving them the essential experience to jump-start their career in the construction industry.

Rotec were selected to provide the steel door package for the project’s stations in partnership with Kier as part of their key supply chain.

Solutions

Due to an unforeseen supply issue, Rotec were appointed to the project late into the programme. As a key member of Kier’s supply chain, we were keen to assist them on Luton DART and use our solutions-led approach to ensure a successful delivery in line with the project’s tight deadline.

2 stations situated 1.5 miles apart presented some logistical challenges but these were quickly overcome through clear, continual communication with Kier from the start. Detailed schedules were created to ensure efficient delivery and installation of our doors in line with the broader project timeline.

Additionally, our project team worked closely with the access control company to create a design solution that worked for all parties. Our research and development team went above and beyond to seek assessment on a specific door closer to meet the client’s requirements.

To meet the tight turnaround, our fast-track service was added into the package. Drawings, manufacturing, and delivery to site were completed in just 4 weeks and installation was promptly completed by our excellent engineers.
