Background

The new prison at Glen Parva is the second prison being built by the Government, alongside the new prison at Wellingborough. Glen Parva and Wellingborough prison are jointly expected to create 3,360 modern, safe, and secure prison places.

The Challenge

The brief presented a number of design and technical challenges.

Each door required a Ministry of Justice lock but due to tightened security procedures, the locks were not able to be fitted at the manufacturing stage.

Collaboration with numerous stakeholders including the exterior steel gate sub-contracting company and architects also gave time related challenges, with eighty percent of the doors on this project being fitted with third party security gate systems, which our steel doors had to work in conjunction with.

For the workshop entrances, the product requirement was to come up with a bespoke solution for the overhead insulated roller shutter doors. A small challenge that needed technical product expertise.

Our solution

Over the last 18 months, we’ve consulted with Lendlease throughout the project to achieve specification compliance to the associated HMPS standards.

We supplied and installed an extensive steel door package of ninety-two LPS 1175 SR2 Security Rated Steel Doors, 8 Cube Sectional Roller Shutter Doors, 9 Traditional Sectional Overhead Doors, 25 Roller shutters, with additional Fire-Rate Steel Doors on the Glen Parva prison project. Our SR2 doors already approved by Secured by Design met the approval for the Prison scheme.

Rotec’s project management team worked hand in hand with the MOJ’s lock manufacturer, to ensure the design of the lock housing in production was without fault, allowing the third-party locks to be fitted straight after hand over.

It was imperative that all door installations were correct due to the lead-times of the project. To ensure there were no issues at the time of the project handover, we ran multiple quality checks throughout the design process, working in collaboration with all third-party stakeholders integrally involved. As the pictures highlight, the doors installed were ready for the third-party locks to be installed.

Rotec specified Cube overhead shutter doors at two entrance points, which met the air permeability requirements of a 1.5 U-Vlaue. This choice of product had a unique concertina feature which suited the internal ceiling space, giving the client a valued engineered solution.

The challenges of working with other engineering sub-contracting firms on major projects like this is where Rotec excels, due to having the right people and expertise to tightly run the project from cradle to grave, with the utmost diligence, care, and attention.
