Ultraviolet (UV) light is invisible to the human eye. It is both vital yet potentially hazardous. Excessive exposure to this spectrum of natural light can damage the human skin. This is why polyvinyl butyral and Ionaplast films in laminated safety glass provide protection from UV radiation. Nonetheless, many organisms, terrestrial and aquatic, need UV light. Honeybees and bumblebees can see within the UV range and thus find their way to the centre of seemingly indistinguishable parts of flowers. Very short-wave UV light kills germs and is therefore used in the quarantine zones of many zoos. Birds need UV light for navigation.
