URSAPAN BLACK insulates Europe’s largest estate regeneration

12-02-2025

More than 3,500 new homes are being built on the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, South East London, as part of the largest estate regeneration project in Europe. To address the growing need for affordable housing, 50% of the development will be affordable homes, 75% will be for social rent and 25% will be for shared ownership or equity.

As social housing residents are already disproportionately affected by rising bills in relation to their income, those in inefficient homes are feeling an increased strain. URSAPAN BLACK insulation has played an integral role in making sure the homes are both comfortable and efficient, helping to ease the economic pressures on residents.

Following the reform of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, insulation products in high-rise (11m or more) cladding systems, such as that of the Aylesbury Estate, must now be of ‘limited combustibility’ or better. Therefore, choosing products which met these robust fire safety standards was vital.

John McElhinney, Contracts Manager at Stanta, explained: “URSAPAN BLACK has a Euroclass A1 rating which means it is totally non-combustible. In addition to this, as part of our own intense specification process here at Stanta, we put each product to the test to ensure any materials we use are up to the robust standards we work to.

“URSAPAN BLACK was no exception. It withstood several rounds of rigorous fire testing giving us peace of mind that by specifying it we could ensure safe homes for future residents.”

Not only did URSAPAN BLACK meet the robust fire safety regulations, but it also aligned with The Hill Group’s sustainability commitments, which were also central to the project. One of the key features of the design was the development of an energy centre which would power the homes through a communal heating network. URSAPAN BLACK keeps the heat generated by this system inside the building which reduces energy usage by minimising heat loss.

Mark Guest, Southern Regional Sales Manager at URSA UK, said: “Quality insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce CO2 emissions and meet sustainability initiatives. URSAPAN BLACK’s BRE Green Guide Rating of A+ proves its minimal environmental impact across its life cycle and aligns with our mission to make the planet the focus of everything we do.”
