Dale End Park, Ironbridge - Telford Borough Council

14-11-2024

In May 2024, eibe Play Ltd was delighted to be awarded the contract to design and install a new play area for Telford Borough Council in Ironbridge after a vigorously competitive tender process involving 17 bids and extensive public consultation. Ironbridge Gorge, where Dale End Park is situated, is recognized as a World Heritage Site. It is famed as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and for its iconic Iron Bridge, built in 1779.

The tender brief specified that the play area should appear natural, using sustainably sourced timber to harmonise with the park's aesthetic. The design was to incorporate inclusive and challenging climbing features suitable for older children while reflecting the area's industrial heritage and the iconic Iron Bridge. Additionally, the installation of a nature-themed safety surface was crucial to blend in with the local environment.

eibe play consultant Iain Etridge and designer Tom Taylor conducted thorough research into the local history to shape the design strategy. This resulted in a superbly themed play area that mirrors the heritage of Ironbridge Gorge. It features two main play structures: the Polar climbing unit, which emulates the Iron Bridge and provides various climbing and traversing challenges, and the Mountains and Valleys Train play unit, fostering social and imaginative play among younger children. In addition to the main structures are a variety of play elements, including flat swings, a toddler swing, an inclusive parent/toddler swing seat, a basket swing, a seesaw, spring rockers, and benches. Multiple interactive play panels around the play zones enhance social engagement. The playground, installed on a bark mulch safety surface, integrates seamlessly into the historic surroundings. Furthermore, two pieces of gym equipment—an exercise bike and a knee raise unit—have been installed adjacent to the play area for parents to use.

Opening on November 6th, 2024, the play area has proven extremely popular with local residents. The council gave overwhelming approval for this significant enhancement to their recreational infrastructure.

This exciting addition to our playground is perfect for little adventurers. It provides a safe, dynamic and exciting environment where children can explore, learn, and grow. The variety of equipment offers numerous activities that cater to different ages and abilities, ensuring every child finds something enjoyable. It effectively encourages outdoor physical activity, imaginative play, and social interaction among peers.
