Orangeries became popular in the 17th century for growing exotic fruits and plants, with orange trees being the main intended plant for propagation - this is where the name Orangery Style originated.

Following the introduction of orange and Lime trees, more exotic plants were housed. Samples of these plants were brought back by the wealthy who could afford to travel and were able to pay to upkeep these delicate plants in the cold British winters. Orangeries soon became a status symbol amongst the wealthy.
