The Victoria and Albert Museum houses the national collection of historic wallpapers. The archive holds individual items from the late 15th century and sample books dating from the 1830s to the 1970s. The ornate effect on this matt ceramic tile is adapted from a sample of wallpaper called Star Trellis from one of three pattern books that together contain 932 specimens of wallpapers, borders and corner-pieces from 1837–44.
