Barbican Centre - flat roof solution with FOAMGLAS® cellular glass

The Barbican Centre, situated within the City of London, is a residential, commercial and cultural venue renowned for its brutalist style of architecture. The centre hosts a wide variety of performances including theatre, film screenings, exhibitions and concerts, with the latter being undertaken by the London and BBC symphony orchestra’s which are based there.

Construction of the Centre took place initially between 1971 to 1982 (when it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II) based upon the design of architects Chamberlain, Powell and Bon. Subsequent refurbishment and adaptions have taken place, with the Barbican Centre Complex gaining Grade II listed status in 2001.

FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation, with its high compressive strength and long-term performance characteristics, was selected for use within the flat roof structure to ensure that this iconic development was protected throughout its lifetime and retains its status as the largest Performing Arts Centre of its kind, within Europe.
