CUPA HEAVY 3™ natural slate is quarried from the Group’s No3 quarry in San Pedro de Trones (Leon) in northern Spain. This quarry has been in operation since 1892 and produces some 25,000 tons each year. The slate is blue black with a slightly gritty texture, and in some samples well defined parallel lines are clearly visible on the cleavage surfaces.
Slate from the San Pedro quarry is produced in two thicknesses, 3.5mm and 7-8mm; the thicker variant being the preferred choice in Scotland. The extra thickness and weight give it strength to withstand the high wind speeds and driving rain common throughout Scotland.
It is ideally suited for the Scottish market due to its close similarity to the traditional highland slate from Ballachulish that is no longer produced. Both are blue black in colour and of similar thickness, and pyrite crystals are usually present in both.
There is no other natural material for roofing such as slate. If thinking of a waterproof and long term roof with no maintenance, roofing slates are the best option. Our resolute commitment to quality has earned us the trust of thousands of architects, installers and customers, reaffirming our world leadership in the natural roofing slate sector. Using cutting-edge production and quality controls, CUPA PIZARRAS produces unique, globally recognized slates that meet or exceed all international standards.
Slate is subject only to extraction and working processes and does not need any additional treatment. The simplicity of its production process, which does not need any artificial materials, furnaces or chemical products, make it the sustainable alternative for any project. We at CUPA PIZARRAS are proud to offer the market a natural product with lower environmental impact than any other alternative for roofs and cladding.
