It’s World Architecture Day, and this year’s theme, chosen by the International Union of Architects is ‘Architecture for Resilient Communities'. It's a topic close to our heart here at Biotecture! 💚
In an era of urbanisation, climate change and environmental challenges, Architects and designers have a duty to design buildings that help create a more sustainable future. In recent years, the focus has been on reducing carbon emissions, but a holistic approach to sustainability is essential for creating a sustainable future. This includes integrating nature into our cities and urban areas.
Living walls and other forms of green infrastructure can play a crucial role in creating resilient communities:
🌿 Space saving greenery: living walls are perfect for greening up cities where space is literally and financially at a premium.
💨 Air Quality Improvement: Living walls act as natural air purifiers, absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. This helps combat air pollution and promotes healthier, cleaner air for residents.
🐝 Biodiversity Enhancement: By creating pollinating insects, and other wildlife, living walls contribute to urban biodiversity. Biodiversity is vital for our food chain.
🔊 Noise reduction: Living walls can serve as effective sound barriers, reducing noise pollution and creating quieter, more livable spaces in urban environments.
🌡️ Thermal Regulation: The plants on living facades provide insulation and shading, helping to reduce the reliance of mechanical heating and cooling.
🍃 Cooler Streets: Living walls cool the surrounding area through evapo-transpiration, making urban areas more pleasant in the hotter months.
💚 Reduced stress and improved well-being: The presence of greenery has been proven to reduce stress and promote mental well-being.
Resilience means adapting to change, and our world is changing whether we like it or not! Incorporating living walls into architectural projects is not just about aesthetics; it can also be part of creating sustainable, resilient cities of the future!
